AFTER 10 days in limbo, DAP has finally received an official notification from the Registrar of Societies (RoS) of its decision on the party’s central executive committee.

DAP national legal bureau chairman Gobind Singh Deo did not disclose the content of the letter but only confirmed that the party received it today.

“The CEC (central executive committee) will meet this Wednesday to discuss the content of the letter. A statement will be issued after that,” he told The Malaysian Insight in a WhatsApp message.

On July 7, director-general of RoS Mohammad Razin Abdullah issued a press statement ordering DAP to hold fresh party elections for its CEC. The party was not officially notified of the decision.

Razin said DAP’s CEC elections on September 29, 2013 were not held in accordance with the law, leading to complaints by some party members. The RoS deemed the appointment of the CEC and main office-bearers as legally invalid.

He said the elections should have been based on the delegates’ list used for the CEC elections held on December 15, 2012 involving 2,576 delegates from 854 branches.

The DAP’s troubles started after a “copy and paste” error was made during the vote count in the December 2010 party polls, causing irregularities in the CEC election results.

The mistake was later rectified but unhappy members filed complaints with the RoS, leading to the elected CEC to be declared invalid. DAP held another election in September 2013, producing its current line-up of leaders.

On July 8, the DAP CEC in an emergency meeting decided not to hold fresh party elections and would seek a meeting with the RoS to “clear the air”. – July 17, 2017.
