All Umno vice-presidents to head party in 3 states

ALL three of the newly elected Umno vice-presidents will be heading the party in Perlis, Selangor, and Terengganu, in a massive restructuring of the party’s leadership announced by party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today.

All of Umno’s top leaders at the state level have been changed, except for Negri Sembilan, which will still be led by former menteri besar Mohamad Hasan.

Perlis Umno is now led by Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who is the former chairman of Johor Umno and was once Johor menteri besar. Khaled is replacing Shahidan Kassim, who was involved in the Arau Palace controversy regarding the Perlis menteri besar appointment last May 9.

Meanwhile, Selangor Umno will be led by Ismail Sabri Yaakob, and Terengganu by Umno vice-president Mahdzir Khalid.

Selangor Umno was previously led by Noh Omar, while former menteri besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman had led Terengganu Umno.

This is the second time Umno has placed its vice-presidents to lead the state’s party branches. In 2008, a similar restructuring was enforced after the general elections, involving states that were considered problematic and underperforming.

Perlis Umno is currently believed to be in crisis after supporters were split between Shahidan and Azlan Man. At the peak of the crisis, Ismail Kassim, Shahidan’s brother who is also the state assemblyman for Tambun Tualang, pulled out from Umno.

Terengganu Umno also had its fair share of internal crises similar to Perlis, involving several factions that resulted in the loss of the state to PAS in GE14.

Umno only won 10 of the 32 state seats, whereas PAS won the remaining seats.

Zahid is replacing former Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak with Musa Aman in Sabah as Umno’s state liaison. Musa will be assisted by Bung Mokhtar Radin as his deputy, and former Dewan Rakyat speaker, Pandikar Amin Mulia, will be his secretary.

Kedah Umno is led by former minister in the prime minister’s department Jamil Khir Baharom, who lost the Jerai parliamentary seat, while Federal Territories Umno is led by Johari Abdul Ghani, who lost the Titiwangsa parliamentary seat.

Meanwhile for Pahang, Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, who replaced Adnan Yaakob as menteri besar, heads Umno in the state.

Former Umno works secretary Ab Rauf Yusoh was elected to lead Malacca Umno, replacing former minister Idris Haron.

Zahid also restructured the leadership of Perak Umno, appointing Saarani Mohamad as the head of state to replace Zambry Abdul Kadir, who is now a member of the party’s Supreme Council.

Kelantan Umno, which once again failed to wrestle back the state from PAS in the last general election, is now led by Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub. He is replacing Mustapa Mohamed, who is now a Supreme Council member after winning the June 30 Umno elections.

  • The old guard and apple polishers are firmly in control. UMNO has learned nothing and will be doomed to irrelevance without their weapons of corruption and racial division because they are now unacceptable to the people (as well as against the law).

  • With so many former "greats", it will be an interesting face off between powerful frenemies especially in Sabah.
