FORMER attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali has been named as one of 11 appointed Umno Supreme Council members, the party’s newly elected president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said today.

Zahid was quoted on Umno Online as saying that the new appointees were chosen in line with the party’s resolve to implement reforms that would keep it relevant in the current political scenario.

“In line with (the conclusion) of the latest party election, as Umno president, I announce the list of appointed Supreme Council members under Article 9.2.8 of the party’s constitution, as well as the appointed Umno state liaison chiefs and other state leaders,” Zahid said.

Apandi was replaced as attorney-general by Tommy Thomas following Pakatan Harapan’s victory against Barisan Nasional in the 14th general elections.

Others on the list of Umno Supreme Council members include former foreign minister Anifah Aman, former agriculture and agro-based industries deputy minister Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, and former women, families and community development deputy minister Azizah Mohd Dun.

In an immediate response to the announcement, Apandi thanked Zahid for the appointment and said he believed that his experience as a former judge and attorney-general would be crucial in helping Umno rise up from its crippling losses in the last election.

“My appointment is well-received, and since I no longer hold any post in the government as a judge or attorney-general, I am now able to be involved in politics.

“Thank you. Alhamdulillah, I can finally fight in the name of my beloved party. I will voice out, speak out because Umno needs my expertise in the legal field, and I am prepared to give guidance,” he told Malay-language daily Utusan Malaysia today.

Another notable appointment announced by Zahid is Annuar Musa, formerly Umno’s information chief, as the party secretary-general replacing Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, who will take on the role of treasurer.

Zahid also appointed the heads of the three wings – Norliza Abdul Rahim (Wanita), Shahril Sufian Hamdan (Youth) dan Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi (Puteri) – to the Supreme Council.

Glaring absentees from the party’s previous Umno Supreme Councils include party veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin – both of whom had contested and lost against Zahid for the president’s post in last month’s party polls. – July 14, 2018.

    • Fully agree and 60 thieves more to go in but the problem is that the speed of such a thing happening is snail's pace. Rakyat is getting impatient as unfortunately, the due process of the law must take its place. Worry that evidence could be destroyed by then.
