ALL national schools would receive equal allocation from the federal government in due time, said Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching.

She said under the current system, some national schools were fully subsidised while others were partially subsidised.

“They are all public schools and serving our children. We hope to abolish such a system,” Teo told The Malaysian Insight in an interview on Facebook Live, tonight.

Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools in Malaysia receive partial subsidies while Malay-medium schools are fully subsidised.

Some Chinese and Tamil educationists have long resented the system which left the vernacular schools to fend for themselves.

However, Teo said the ministry needed to further study the matter in view of the Finance Ministry’s three-year austerity plan.

“It’s challenging for the Education Ministry because the number of students keep increasing every year,” she said.

In the meantime, the ministry will focus on providing allocation for schools with the most urgent needs. – July 12, 2018.

  • Two bones of contention:
    1. LACK OF INTEGRATION: You might wanna consider setting ethnic quotas across the board for admission into SKs and SJKs. Integration best starts from childhood. Everything is likely to take its own course after that. Saying that there are Malays in SJKC as well is not a good reason. There are over 80% Malays out there who are not in SJKs and SKs are fast becoming Malay-centric schools rather than the ones with balanced ethnic proportions that I used to know from the 90s.
    2. LANGUAGE MASTERY: It goes against pure logic that an educated kid still fails to master BM properly despite years in the national education system in this age, what more if we wanna look at schools as not just providing education equality but also in the context of nation-building and BM as the national language, plays a huge role in the daily life of Malaysians. The method of learning BM in SJKs is just appalling. As a teacher, I often hear these students being subjected to rote-learning by memorising essays, which is not language-learning at all. Addressing these matters may help to resolve the issue of SJK kids dropping out at secondary level or having to go thru Remove. Some schools which produce good quality SPM results failed to be listed under the DLP programme despite demand from parents cos the Remove classes' results drags them down in terms of overall school results in BM and English, which is one of the requirements to enrol in DLP.

  • I remember back in the early 90's our kemahiran hidup class means fixing up the broken tables and chairs collected from a nearby fully subsidised SK!

  • English proficiency is very important in the years leading up to Industrial Revolution (No. 4) when loss of jobs to robots and AI(artificial intelligence) will require Malaysians to be able to secure well-paying jobs overseas, especially in developed countries. So there would be no need to breathe down each other's neck for the fewer jobs available then..

  • National integration is more important. Make national school the number 1 choice for all Malaysians. This should be our priority. Then we don't need vernacular schools. Singapore adopts this approach. National school cannot be turned into "religious" school. This will make non muslims reject national school.
