Things will be pricier when SST comes into play, says Najib

NAJIB Razak has warned Malaysians when the sales and services tax (SST) is implemented in September, the prices of goods will be much higher.

The former prime minister said the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government is to be blamed for zero-rating the goods and services tax (GST) and causing a limbo in the country’s taxation, which would eventually result in an increase of the price of goods.

“The price of goods did not even go down after GST was zero-rated, I am concerned that when SST is implemented, the price of goods will be higher than before GST was zero-rated.

“This is the danger when the country’s taxation is manipulated at will and Barisan Nasional has warned about this before the 14th general election,” Najib said in a statement on his Facebook today.

The former Umno president shared an article of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail claiming that prices of goods barely dropped after GST was zero-rated.

Najib said he was “shocked” with the current government admitting that GST was not the problem for prices being inflated.

He also said it contradicts the stand taken by PH to reduce the price of goods nationwide.

“This will affect the people’s cost of living and goes against PH’s promise of lowering the price of goods in its manifesto,” Najib said.

The Pekan MP urged Putrajaya to immediately rectify this problem for the sake of Malaysians.

“I hope the PH government will do something about this so that this worry does not become a reality,” Najib said. – July 12, 2018.

  • Use a bit of your common sense before you start talking nonsense. The collection for GST was some RM49 billion last year, which is expected to reduce to some RM30 billion with the introduction of SST. Simple mathematics will tell you that generally GST will result in higher pricing of goods than SST. And I understand that you have a degree in economics.

    • GST is a multi tiered tax whereby the price of goods may be jacked up at several points, which also contribute to the higher collection figures while SST is levied only at the POS (Point of Sale)
