Consider impact on Malays, Islam before recognising UEC, Rais tells govt

Former sociocultural adviser to the government Rais Yatim wants the government to reconsider its decision to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, July 10, 2018.

THE government needs to conduct an in-depth study, including taking into consideration the interests of the Malays, the country’s majority ethnic group, before making the decision to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), says former sociocultural adviser to the government Rais Yatim.

He said the government should also consider the views of the Conference of Rulers on the implications recognition of the UEC would have for the Malay language, Malay customs, and Islam.

“I think that (recognising) the UEC is something big which touches on the core of civilisation, the core of education and the core of our country’s values. Therefore it requires an in-depth study first.

“This means it’s not something that can just be decided by the cabinet, but rather requires input from scholars as well as social and community development experts in the country,” he told reporters after a lecture on youth leadership, in Nilai, today.

Rais said the government should also look at the origins of the UEC and its true purpose, as well as how it would affect the position of the Malay language and Malaysia’s education system in general, moving forward.

“In addition, it is also necessary for the government to examine why it needs to be recognised. Is this something of interest to the majority, or to certain quarters with a vested interest in the future of a particular group?” – Bernama, July 10, 2018.

    • Exactly, Rais you are sounding like a Malay/Muslim supremist in a multiracial country. The radicals will grab on this and create disaffection by suggesting that the Chinese are trying to take over. Learn from something which has been successful. Not the same old crap!

  • SPIT IT OUT what you are talking about?? All the verbosity does not mean there is a coherent thought. These objector think what? So what if Chinese do not learn or speak Malay well? How does that threaten Malay language and Islam? It's jumping into conclusion, it's not a coherent argument.

  • It is unfortunate that prejudice had clouded his judgment. He will not utter so much remarks if he had tried to understand the nature of UEC. Sad.

  • Rais is talking cock. What is the connection between UEC certification and Islam? If anything, recognition of UEC will stop the brain drain and the loss of talents to other countries.

  • Seeking knowledge is obligatory to all Muslims, even if you have to go all the way to China. But the Chinese have come or sent to you instead and taught you many many things. Doesn't it make you look really ungrateful.

  • Rais, don't complicate matters. The issue is simple n straightforward. UEC must be considered purely base on merits n merit alone. Race n others shd not be brought into the picture as Umno did in the past. Don't drag the royalty into this matter as this has nothing to do wt religion or race. You are just making this political n playing up unfounf fears n insecurity of the Malays. Don't be a racist!

  • UEC is not recognised since decades ago, do we have harmony issues ? Has Malay livelihood affected by these Chinese Speaking Scholar?

Let's not just say NO. Work out what is needed for UEC scholar to be included into local university. Besides, UEC syllabus is also guided by MOE.

  • Rais you are still harping on a system which up to now has not worked no thanks to your former party's divisive racial polices. Why not talk about shared Malaysian values and culture if there is one in the first place again no thanks to your former party's divisive policies. You see there's been much talk but little action. So don't come to us and start mouthing about issues like these. It's quite sickening.

  • In the interest of racial harmony in Malaysia, it may be wise for Rais Yatim not to comment on issues that incite the feelings of Malaysians and which divide them. If he can cease and dessist from such remarks, that is his greatest contribution towards peace and harmony in this country. His travails with employing domestic servants from a neighbouring country may be disturbing his mental well being.

  • Mahathir must now realize that integration is a better way than segregation. Anywathing is better than what was previously. Older people in Malaysia speak better English than younger ones. Nationalism must be inclusive-what we need to do is to use the Chinese and English models in our educational system. I would like to WARN the new government of bringing in people like Rais etc. They are not going to help, and whatever they did previously caused the rot. Bring in young, new minds. Dont 'pusing, pusing' with the old UMNO guard. They had their time-say goodbye and look to young Malay,Chinese and Indian leaders!
