Corruption, abuse of power distractions to progress, says Dr Mahathir

CORRUPTION and lack of integrity in the civil service will keep Malaysia from achieving its goal of reaching developed-nation status, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

At the prime minister’s monthly assembly this morning, Dr Mahathir urged civil servants not to give in to the temptation to abuse their power and position to enrich themselves.

He said that lack of integrity and hard work in the civil service had, in the past, distracted people from progress and development in the country.

“The power given to us is to carry out certain duties. This power cannot be used to enrich ourselves, our friends or family.

“(If) we abuse this power, we will be victims ourselves and the country will be backwards and cannot advance like others,” said the 93-year-old.

“We were progressing towards Vision 2020 but we forgot our journey and stopped moving.

“To ensure that we reach these goals, we need sincerity, integrity and hard work,” he said.

Dr Mahathir reminded the civil service that Malaysia could do great things if the people put their hearts and minds to it.

This place we are standing on now used to be a oil palm estate. But it is now a city. If we weren’t interested, this city would never have been built,” he said. – July 9, 2018.

  • Why should lack of integrity and corruption and easy money be a distraction to the civil service? Take note that results to exams in school are quota based. Usually, results cannot fail. But if fail, still can go to University FREE of charge so why need to study anyway? At University, even if results are no good, previously, government also give jobs easily and if one knows how to play politics at work, no need to work hard, just play politics and advance up the career ladder. Free money and commissions are acceptable previously. Look at Scorpenes commission of RM500 million. It is acceptable to collect commissions and donations. So why pick on these exemplary people who just followed the system. Now Tun Mahathir wants to do another system so it is okay to just learn how to receive free money under the new establishment.

And we can always blame everything on the cheating Chinese. If they dont give bribes, there will not be corruption at all. RIGHT?

So it is all the fault of Lim Guan Eng and Lim Kit Siang for being corrupt and bribing the Malays for 61 years and now they have all the say to bribe others in government.

  • Therefore, civil servants need to be aware and work harder to ensure that the country continues to compete with other developed countries. Make it Tun Mahathir's challenge to fulfilling the mission and goals of the Pakatan Harapan government.
