ZAKIR Naik will not be extradited tonight, said the inspector-general of police.

Mohamad Fuzi Harun’s confirmation puts to rest earlier reports that the controversial preacher would be handed over to Indian authorities by today.

“It is not true. He will not be extradited to India tonight,” he told The Star.

It was reported that Indian broadcaster NDTV had confirmed with Malaysian police that Zakir would be returned tonight.

He is known for his hate speeches, which allegedly inspired one of the assailants in the 2016 Dhaka terror attack.

Mohammed Raby Abu Bakar, an officer with Bukit Aman’s counterterrorism unit, had told NDTV in Kuala Lumpur: “He (Zakir) is out of the country tonight. He will be taking a flight to India today I believe.”

Zakir, however, through his organisation, the Islamic Research Foundation, denied that he would return to India any time soon.

“The news of my coming to India is totally baseless and false.

“I have no plans to come to India as I don’t feel safe from unfair prosecution.

“Inshaallah, when I feel that the government will be just and fair, I will surely return to my homeland.”

It was also reported that his lawyer said no extradition notice had been given. – July 4, 2018.

  • A government that is chosen based on its promises of a new multi-racial "rule of law" Malaysia of tolerance and change for the better cannot and must not harbour a lying hateful preacher who is wanted by another friendly democratic Asian neighbour, India. He is accused of breaking his own country's laws and even the Bangladesh security agencies reported that he inspired one of the killed Dhaka bomb terrorists. Naik is also banned from entering several mainly European countries.

I read it as he will be extradited later. Is that correct?

  • I just don't understand why we must keep this guy in the country. Whoever he is, his presence here has become a thorn in the flesh for multi-racial Malaysia. Just send him back as he is a citizen of another country.
