FORMER Felda chairman Shahrir Abdul Samad is being questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today over the RM1 million which he allegedly received from former Umno president Najib Razak in 2015.

The funds were believed to have come from the troubled state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), sources told The Malaysian Insight.

Sources said Shahrir is one of the 81 individuals whose bank accounts have been frozen by the authorities in connection with the 1MDB probe.

Yesterday, the 1MDB special task force revealed that a total of 408 bank accounts belonging to 81 individuals and 55 companies amounting to RM1.1 billion were frozen by MACC in connection with the 1MDB probe since the end of May.

The statement said the accounts also belonged to political parties and civil society groups and that the exercise was done on June 26 and 29.

Sharir, the BNBBC chairman in 2015, admitted receiving the funds from then prime minister Najib Razak.

“Who else can I ask financial assistance for administration expenses if not from the party president himself,” he said, commenting on an article by Sarawak Report which claimed he had received funds from Najib.

Shahrir in a statement published by BNBBC.my later picked up by Astro Awani said he is ready to explain the matter if he is asked to do so.

The statement said it was a normal for a party president to provide financial aid, especially to a division with inadequate funds.

Sarawak Report on August 14, 2017 alleged that Shahrir received RM1 million after the 13th general election and former minister Ahman Maslan received RM2 million.

The report also alleged that then Puteri Umno chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin received RM50,000 after the elections. – July 3, 2018.

  • Due to inflation one million is a small sum nowadays. Just barely enough to buy a high end Mercedes Benz.
