THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) confirmed that newly minted Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will present himself at the graft-buster’s headquarters tomorrow to assist in the investigations of two cases.

“MACC confirms that (we) have contacted former deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to present himself at MACC headquarters on Monday, July 2, 2018.

“He has been asked to assist in MACC’s investigation in two separate cases,” MACC deputy chief (operations) Azam Baki said in a statement today.

Azam said MACC contacted Zahid on June 27 to present himself at MACC headquarters in Putrajaya tomorrow at 10am to give his statement.

Zahid allegedly used over RM800,000 from a foundation to pay for his and his wife’s credit card bills, Malay-language daily Sinar Harian had reported.

The Bagan Datoh MP told the press earlier today that he will give his statement to MACC tomorrow.

“I have been asked to explain several issues. One of them is about a foundation owned by my family,” said the former deputy prime minister at his maiden press conference as Umno president today.

Zahid said the foundation is a charitable organisation that is meant to build orphanages, mosques, and tahfiz schools.

“The money comes from my friends and I who want to do charity,” said Zahid.

When asked if he would be grilled on allegations that Umno had received money from scandal-ridden 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), Zahid was evasive and said he did not want to guess what other questions MACC would have for him.

“I will give my full cooperation to MACC, although I am not sure about the questions that will be asked,” said Zahid.

MACC has frozen over 900 accounts linked to state investment fund 1MDB, including Umno main and state accounts. – July 1, 2018.
