THERE will be new regulations for e-hailing soon based on the e-hailing amendments passed last year, said Anthony Loke.

The transport minister said this was to ensure a level playing field for both taxi and e-hailing drivers in Malaysia.

“Of course, we will base them on the amendments for the e-hailing services (act) passed last year,” Loke said to reporters at KLIA today.

“We will enforce the regulations based on the amendments to the act.

“There are no new amendments; we are just enforcing the amendments.”

On July 27 last year, amendments to the Land Public Transport Act 2010 and Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB) Act 1987 to legalise e-hailing services were passed at the Dewan Rakyat.

Like conventional taxi drivers, e-hailing operators will also have to send their vehicles for periodic checks, go for health screenings, and take up insurance policies.

Loke said that he also encouraged taxi drivers to switch to e-hailing services.

“Taxi also can use the e-hailing services. We are not restricting any taxi drivers from using e-hailing, we encourage it, in fact.

“So it isn’t that I don’t understand what they are facing. We will announce our policy soon regarding e-hailing.

“And we encourage the taxi drivers to use their services,” he said.

Loke said he would be meeting the taxi associations soon to discuss the new policies. – June 28, 2018.
