AUSTRALIAN model Miranda Kerr should emulate actor Leonardo DiCaprio’s move of handing back gifts allegedly bought with money stolen from 1MDB, reports the Guardian.

Kerr was the recipient of millions of dollars of jewels, gifted by Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, a central figure in the 1Malaysian Development Bhd scandal.

DiCaprio surrendered an Oscar statue originally won by Marlon Brando to the United States government as part of the Department of Justice’s (DoJ) probe into allegations of corruption in 1MDB.

SABM Australia, a civic organisation based in Melbourne, said while “not alleging any wrongdoing by Miranda Kerr”, she should nevertheless “hand over all jewels gifted to her”.

The jewellery, said US prosecutors, included an 11.72 carat heart-shaped diamond valued at US$1.29 million (RM5.54 million), which Low presented to the Victoria Secret model on Valentine’s Day in 2014, shortly after Kerr’s divorce from actor Orlando Bloom.

She also received a US$3.8 million 8.88 carat diamond pendant from New York-based designer Lorraine Schwartz.

SABM Australia called on Kerr to follow DiCaprio’s example.

The Guardian said it also wanted Australian “police to investigate if any of the stolen funds have found their way to purchase Australian assets, including property, works of art and jewellery”.

Brando’s Oscar statue was given to DiCaprio by Red Granite, the production house co-owned by Prime Minister Najib Razak’s stepson Riza Aziz, the financer of The Wolf of Wall Street, starring DiCaprio.

Red Granite gave DiCaprio the Oscar as a thank-you gift after work on The Wolf of Wall Street wrapped up. He voluntarily handed the statue over prior to the latest filing, according to a report by Hollywood entertainment site Vanity Fair.

The DoJ is taking legal action to seize assets worth US$540 million (RM2.3 billion) believed to have been bought using funds siphoned off from 1MDB.

Among items are rights to other Red Granite films, Dumb and Dumber To and Daddy’s Home, real estate, yacht, jewellery, artwork of van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Basquiat, and Diane Arbus, and movie posters. – June 22, 2017.
