FISHERMEN will continue receiving their allowances despite a change in government, said Salahuddin Ayub.

The agriculture and agro-based industry minister was responding to complaints by fishermen that they have not been getting what was due to them.

We want to assure fishermen that, even though the government has changed, they will continue to get their allowances.

“We will also investigate complaints that their allowances were not banked into their accounts recently,” he said after visiting the Lembaga Pertubuhan Peladang Tower today.

Salahuddin said a technical glitch in the banking system could have caused the delay.

Some 57,000 fishermen receive a monthly allowance of between RM200 and RM300.

Salahuddin said that the funds were deposited on June 11 and that those who had yet to receive it would do so tomorrow.

“Some didn’t get it because there was a minor issue with the Agrobank, but there were no issues with other banks.

“We will look into this so that their allowances will not be disrupted,” he said, adding that those who had yet to get their allowances after this should contact the ministry.

He said that once the Malaysian economy recovers, the government would look into giving more incentives for the people. – June 21, 2018.
