KJ makes it four-way race for Umno presidency

Khairy Jamaluddin posted his nomination form to contest the Umno presidency on Instagram. – June 17, 2018.

UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has put himself in the running for the party presidency.

The former youth and sports minister in a cryptic tweet confirmed that he would be gunning for Umno’s top post in a four-way race.

“Let the chips fall where they may,” Khairy posted on Twitter.

The tweet drew on a popular American idiom which means to let a situation unfold without worrying about the consequences.

In an Instagram posting, Khairy also shared a photograph of his nomination form for the Umno presidency.

Umno Supreme Council member Abdul Rahman Dahlan has already thrown his support for the 42-year old claiming he would take the party to new heights.

The Star Online today speculated that Khairy would submit his application to contest for party president’s post at Umno headquarters today.

The Rembau MP has previously announced that he would run for one of the three vice-president’s posts. The report did not clarify whether Khairy had changed his mind about contesting a VP post.

Today is the last day for the candidates to submit their applications to run in the party’s elections which are expected to be the most heated in 30 years.

The June 30 polls are seen as a crucial first step towards rebuilding Umno after it lost federal power for the first time.

So far, three candidates have thrown their hats into the ring for the presidency, namely current deputy president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and blogger Rahmat Azim Abdul Aziz. – June 17, 2018

  • What is the logic behind waiting until Razaleigh announce? That the older warlords votes would split, then his youth vote would win over both of them? Wouldn't it be better to get those behind Razaleigh to endorse him?
