Jho Low's lawyers respond to MACC

LAWYERS for financier Low Taek Jho, or better known as Jho Low, have contacted the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today in an email message acknowledging the anti-graft body’s intention to question their client, said sources.

“The email was sent to us this evening. It was sent by Jho Low’s lawyer international law firm Kobre & Kim. In the email, he said he has instructed his lawyer to contact us,” the MACC source told The Malaysian Insight.

It is not immediately known what was MACC’s response to the email.

In 2015, when MACC announced it was seeking his cooperation, Low also instructed his lawyers to communicate with the authorities in a similar manner, promising his fullest cooperation.

However, he failed to turn up for questioning.

Earlier today, MACC issued a fresh notice looking for two individuals who could help in its SRC International probe.

Low was one of the individuals, along with former SRC International managing director Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil.

In response to the public announcement, Low’s lawyers issued a statement saying that “through media reports dated June 7, 2018 (today), Mr Low was made aware of the MACC requesting his assistance.

“Following this, Mr Low immediately instructed his lawyers to make contact with the MACC today with respect to offering such assistance,” the statement said.

Low is known to be former prime minister Najib Razak’s confidante and business adviser.

Najib is currently under investigations over allegations that SRC International, which was a subsidiary of 1MDB, was used to siphon off funds from the state investment firm to his bank accounts.

The US Department of Justice has accused him of masterminding the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

Although he never held an official position in 1MDB, Low is said to be among the beneficiaries of the funds used to purchase luxury properties and assets, including a super yacht, paintings and jewellery.

His whereabouts have been unknown for some time.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently said the government “roughly knows” where the businessman is.

Low’s last known address is No. 69, Tanjung Bungah Park, Tanjung Bungah, Penang.

Members of the public with information on both men are urged to contact the investigation officer, Senior Assistant Commissioner Rosli Husain, at 03-8870-0529 or 010-318-7757, or email him at [email protected].

They can also notify the nearest MACC office. – June 7, 2018.
