PUBLIC universities nationwide are now free to organise debates and forums as practised by leading global varsities, said Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik.
He said all administrators of institutions of higher learning are required to heed the directive, which is effective immediately.
Maszlee said as someone who had been barred from participating in such programmes, he does not want students to view universities as restrictive institutions.
He said in order to create a “knowledge-friendly” environment, the ministry will also instruct universities not to have barrier gates at their main entrance, which is currently standard practice.
He added that the ministry will authorise principals and teachers to resolve the issue of heavy schoolbags.
Maszlee also said tahfiz students who have completed their studies will be taught entrepreneurial skills.
“We cannot deny that most tahfiz students will become imams and the like, but they should be given this ‘added value’ so that they can contribute to society and the nation.” – Bernama, June 7, 2018.
