ANWAR Ibrahim yesterday dismissed rumours PKR is in talks with Umno and PAS to form an Islamic government, calling such speculation the talk of mad men.

The de facto PKR leader said he had heard such talk, not only from Umno but also within Pakatan Harapan.

“People who think this way are either mad or have evil minds,” he said in an interview with The Malaysian Insight.

“We fought hard. I was beaten half to death for fighting to change the system. What is the point for me now to conspire in that manner?”

Anwar was responding to rumours that PKR and its 49 MPs are working to form an alliance with BN’s 7 and PAS’ 18 MPs to form an Islamic state.

The alliance was to counter the many non-Muslim MPs in Pakatan Harapan, the rumours said.

“It’s not just Umno. There are clusters within Pakatan Harapan, old elements who are afraid of change.

“If it was from Umno, I’m not surprised. It is baseless,” he said.

Anwar said there were also allegations he was meeting with rulers to “plan something”.

The former deputy prime minister had said his meeting with the rulers was to assure them that despite the change of government, the constitution had not changed  nor had the status of the Malay rulers.

“If I were planning something, I would work with the MPs in PKR. It doesn’t need to involve the rulers.

“I strongly reject (the allegations) and I would like to remind the people that we will go head-to-head against them because they have always sought the ruin of Pakatan Harapan.

“The spirit and principles of PH have held steady since 2008. Now I support this new government. All of this relies on building trust and confidence among the leadership,” he said.

Any internal conspiratorial elements must be exposed, he said. – June 5, 2018.

  • Pakatan's (unexpected) victory was very, very, hard-fought. This return to Parliamentary Democracy & guaranteed well-being of Malaysians is to be savoured and not toyed with or frittered away by any shenanigans! WE MUST GUARD IT VERY WELL & NEVER AGAIN DESCEND INTO THE MEDIOCRITY OF THE RECENT PAST..

  • I'm not surprised that there are constant bad elements trying to disrupt the hard fought unity we've achieved as Malaysians today. This nad-hats thrive on chaos and despair. Their personal agenda and self-centeredness has crippled the country for a long time. I fully agree with DSAI that they must be weeded out and make accountable for their damaging influences.
