ENFORCEMENT staff of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) will be incorporated into the Road Transport Department.

They will not lose their jobs, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said of the 327 officers.

SPAD has a total of 997 staff members, he said, and the ministry will look at where they can be placed.

“Of the 997 staff members as of now (in SPAD), a large number of them are enforcers, 327 people.

“SPAD will be integrating them into the JPJ enforcement team,” he said after a meeting with SPAD at its Kuala Lumpur headquarters.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on May 23 said SPAD would be abolished and its duties taken over by the Transport Ministry.

Dr Mahathir also said “political” or “non-essential” SPAD staff will be dismissed or redeployed.

For remaining staff, Loke said he was still in discussion with SPAD and will raise the matter at the cabinet meeting next week.

“There are other departments like the planning department and policies department, we are still considering what are good options for them,” Loke said.

He added that the final structure for SPAD’s reintegration into the ministry will be clearer when Parliament sits as the Land Public Transport Act 2010 and the Road Transport Act 1987 will need to be merged. – June 1, 2018.
