DR Mahathir Mohamad today announced the scrapping of the MRT3 project as the new government’s cost-cutting plan gathered steam.

He said the cabinet had also affirmed the decision to cancel the KL-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) project.

The prime minister said the circle line project which would link MRT1 and MRT2 would not proceed due to cost factors.

“The cabinet agrees for HSR to be cancelled subject to discussions with Singapore as it involves significant financial implications. For the same reason, MRT3 will also not continue,” he told a press conference today.

The MRT Line 3, part of the third and final line for the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit project, was at its planning and development stage.

The government approved of the MRT 3 Circle (CCL) Line on October 30, last year.

Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) had already begun preparation works on the 40km-long line, of which 32km was set to run underground, that was to start operations in 2025.

Running around the periphery of the Kuala Lumpur city centre with 26 stations planned along the alignment, the line would have intersected with the Klang Valley’s existing urban rail network, expanding its coverage and providing greater connectivity to commuters.

Announcement of tenders and various briefings for the scope of works required for the CCL Line had been ongoing since approval was given.

Earlier this year, the New Straits Times reported that three local consortiums and one from China submitted turnkey bids with financing for the MRT Circle Line. – May 30, 2018.

  • The newly minted PH administration should review not only MRT but also all high cost, corruption loaded projects entered into by the previous Najib/UMNO administration. For such projects it is better to pay compensation for cancellation rather than to continue with the projects where most of the corruption monies would go to companies controlled or loyal to the Najib/UMNO administration. With the huge sum of funds from these many projects combined it would come back to bite Mahathir/PH administration 5 years down the road in the next GE. It is common sense that these projects be cancelled and re-tendered on an open basis not only to save monies for the rakyat but also to cut off funding to the old regime which will be used to attack the newly formed regime.

  • Najib was crazy to do 3 MRT lines one after another in rapid succession. Its like putting on bigger money loser one after another to bail out the previous money loser.

  • Let Najib be answerable to those projects he has approved. Let him as a defaulter be the "assets" to be sold to all those creditors or developer. No compensation should be paid by the PH Government if it is found that the approval is fishy and lopsided. Whatever they want to do with him is non of rakyat concerns. Hang him shoot him let it be. This trash and all his sycophantic debauchers should have been done away sometime ago. The wrath and miseries of the rakyat is unconsolable.
