Singaporeans hail Dr Mahathir for doing them a favour by scrapping HSR

SINGAPOREANS have heaped praise on Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for pulling out of the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail (HSR) project, The Independent reports.

Many took to social media to applaud the move; some even urged Singapore PM Lee Hsien Loong to show the same boldness and scrap the Changi Airport Terminal 5 project.

  • A possible financial disaster will befallen on Malaysia if the HSR project is given the go ahead. This is foreseen by the new Malaysian PM Tun Dr Mahathir.

Now, why didn't all the highly paid and highly qualified ministers foresee the same? Why the PM went ahead to endorse the agreement? He did not know the project was out of reach of the Malaysian government given the financial state Malaysia was in?

  • HSR in name-sake is good for a nation moving towards a developed status but is a huge money loser. Taiwan's HSR, Taipei-Kaohsiung which is roughly the same distance as KL-Singapore, is already 12 years in operations and has been in the red all these years, yes, making losses, despite high ticket prices. It has still not able to meet the projected passenger trips when it was first proposed. And to make things worse the project was delayed for 6 years due to signaling and safety issues. The Taiwanese government had to inject funds into the HSR company to keep it afloat.
