PH leadership ball now in PKR political bureau's court

ANWAR Ibrahim has agreed to allow PKR’s powerful political bureau to make the final decision on whether or not to accept the recently amended Pakatan Harapan’s list of office-bearers, which was a source of contention between the opposition coalition members.

Anwar’s decision to leave the final call on the leadership line-up to his party follows a meeting with Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and his deputy Husam Musa yesterday, said a party source.

The Malaysian Insight learnt that the Amanah leaders met Anwar at the Court of Appeal in Putrajaya yesterday where the jailed opposition leader was present for the decision on his suit over his right to vote in the Permatang Pauh by-election two years ago.

“Datuk Seri (Anwar) has agreed to leave the final call to the political bureau,” the source told The Malaysian Insight.

Following last Friday’s PH presidential council meeting, an agreement was reached by the majority on the structure of the presidential council, which is to be submitted to the Registrar of Societies.

However, PKR had refrained from endorsing the list as it differed from a lineup that was earlier agreed upon by Anwar.

Anwar had apparently sent a letter to his party, saying that he wanted the original line-up, which lists Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar as PH advisers while Dr Wan Azizah would be chairman, to be retained.

In the new line-up, Anwar will be the PH de facto leader or “ketua umum” just like in PKR.

Dr Mahathir, chairman of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), would be appointed chairman while PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Ismail will be president of the PH presidential council.

Muhyiddin Yassin (Bersatu), Mohamad Sabu (Amanah) dan Lim Guan Eng (DAP secretary-general) were appointed as deputy presidents, while Mohamed Azmin Ali (PKR), Mukhriz Mahathir (Bersatu), Salahudin Ayub (Amanah) and Tan Kok Wai (DAP) would be vice-presidents.

Speaking to reporters after last Friday’s meeting, Dr Wan Azizah had said the alliance will announce the new leadership line-up within a week.

Dr Mohamad Nor Manuty, a member of the PKR political bureau, confirmed that the team has been given instructions to make the final decision. – June 14, 2017.
