Bangsar banana leaf restaurant to shut down after filthy dishwashing incident

THE management of Raj’s Banana Leaf, an Indian banana leaf restaurant in Bangsar, has apologised for the hygiene at its outlet, after staff were filmed washing plates with dirty water.

The management issued the apology hours after the video went viral today, but did not say when the incident happened.

However, news portal Twentytwo13 reported Kuala Lumpur mayor Mhd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz as saying that  the restaurant will be shut down tomorrow.

“Gila punya restaurant (Crazy restaurant). I will instruct my health and environment department officers to seal the premise tomorrow,” said Amin.

“It will remain closed until they adhere to all of our regulations.”

The restaurant blamed new staff who were caught washing plates in what appeared to be the back lane of the restaurant.

The workers rinsed and washed the plates with dirty, stagnant water.

“This has never happened before, and should not have had happened. We also want to assure you that Raj’s Banana Leaf consistently passes health inspections conducted regularly,” the management posted on its Facebook page this evening.

The management said it had taken action against its errant workers.

“We will continue to monitor our kitchen attentively and carefully, as hygiene and cleanliness are our top priority. Strict action has been taken against these staff and we assure you that it will not happen again,” it said in the post. – May 29, 2018.

  • OMG - if this is bad - you should go see how the workers wash their utensils at Raju Banana Leave Restaurant at Jalan Gasing. Visit the toilet and see the faeces on the floor all over the kitchen area. No wonder the food taste - delicious

  • The management was giving explanation unacceptable. The management not responsible and give excuse that in future they will monitor. That means they did not monitor earlier. They already have surveillance camera around in the restaurant and outside (Hope so). They not monitor camera whats happening or not bother what is happening. This is really unacceptable.....The Health Department have to check all restaurant in Malaysia to monitor their cleanliness, staff uniforms with proper attire etc. If possible check all their storage place and staff staying place and toilet area as well. Hope this is not happened in future.

  • The management must be held responsible for sure. This attitude of putting the blame on new staff is nothing new. They must pay the price. They should not be let off the hook with meager fines. The owners should be barred totally from owning or operating food outlets.

Set up a nationwide black list to stop this kind of unscrupulous operators from doing business.

  • Poor new staff who was used as a scapegoat for the bad practices because the management did not provide the proper facilities to wash the plates properly. Where are the basins to wash and rinse the plates and utensils?
