POLICE arrested two Urimai leaders for allegedly criticising the Selangor government on social media, party chairman P. Ramasamy said today.

He said police arrested Selangor Urimai chief Gunasekaran Kuppan, also known as Cikgu Segar, and his deputy Raj under the Minor Offences Act yesterday. They are expected to be brought to the Klang magistrate’s court for remand.

“The arrest and detention are linked to TikTok posts, in which both questioned the efficacy of the Selangor government’s iSeed and Sitham schemes,” Ramasamy said in a statement.

“I was informed that some exco members were displeased with Gunasekaran and Raj’s TikTok postings.”

He added that Gunasekaran had been critical of the Selangor government on several issues.

Ramasamy said that when a party leader contacted the police about the arrests, he was told that the police were under pressure from the Selangor government to act against the duo.

“It’s odd that the so-called reformist government can’t handle criticism from the opposition, particularly Urimai.

“The police should not act on political directives from a clueless government. The arrests should not be seen as isolated incidents but as part of the government’s broader repression of the opposition,” he said. – September 6, 2024.
