TENGKU Mahkota of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah has expressed his anger at Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin over the latter’s recent remarks on not being given the prime minister’s post after the last general election (GE15).
In a statement issued by Istana Abdulaziz, Tengku Hassanal asked the police to take decisive action without compromise against the PN chairman for touching on 3R issues (race, religion, royalty).
Tengku Hassanal said Muhyiddin deliberately disparaged Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah’s role as the previous agong.
“His statement also looks immature; it seems as if he still cannot accept that he was not appointed as the prime minister.
“This statement he issued is also very dangerous because it openly incites the people to lose faith in the institution of Malay Rulers and divides the people,” he said in the statement.
Tengku Hassanal said, based on Article 40(2) of the Federal Constitution, the prime minister is appointed at the discretion of the agong who acts as head of state.
Article 43(2) stipulates that the prime minister must be the one who most likely commands the confidence of a majority of Dewan Rakyat members.
Tengku Hassanal said Al-Sultan Abdullah did not arbitrarily decide to appoint the prime minister even though the Federal Constitution gave him absolute power to do so.
“His Majesty at that time had called constitutional experts, the country’s main public servants, and consulted with the Council of Rulers and finally the appointment of the current prime minister was made.
“Parliament also approved a vote of confidence towards Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on December 19, 2022. In that regard, the result was clear and in line with the consideration of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah when His Majesty chose Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.
“Therefore, I want the police to take decisive action without compromise against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who deliberately touched the sentiments of the 3Rs.
“I also want to advise all politicians, as leaders of the people, to always stick to the principles of Rukun Negara and continue to unite the people so that Malaysia as a multi-ethnic country can become a developed country, excel economically, its surrounding environment is sustainable and the people are happy,” he said in the statement.
In a ceramah in Felda Perasu on August 15 during the Nenggiri by-election campaign, Muhyiddin said for some reason, he was not invited by Sultan Abdullah to be sworn in as prime minister after GE15 despite having the numbers needed to form the government.
Muhyiddin is expected to provide a statement to the police tomorrow regarding his speech, which allegedly touched on 3R issues.
