RIGHTS group Suaram has urged Putrajaya to stop a plan to deport Egyptian human rights advocate and asylum seeker Ahmed Hassanine Mohamed Mousa.

It said the Kuala Lumpur High Court had on August 14 granted Hassanine’s application for a stay of deportation.

Suaram executive director Sevan Doraisamy said the court had also granted Hassanine access to his lawyers and representatives from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to complete his refugee application, submitted on October 20 last year.

“Deportation would significantly threaten (Hassanine’s) life and freedom as he has been arrested, tortured, and arbitrarily detained by Egyptian authorities for his involvement in peaceful protests prior to seeking asylum in Malaysia,” he was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini.

“The court decision is also crucial in enabling (Hassanine) to exercise his fundamental right of access to justice, which has been systematically denied by immigration authorities while in detention.”

Suaram urged the Immigration Department and Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to fully comply with the court order. – August 16, 2024.
