New mayor will boost DBKL image, says PM


Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim presents Kuala Lumpur Mayor Maimunah Mohd Sharif with her letter of appointment, today. – August 15, 2024.

MAIMUNAH Mohd Sharif is the right person to take on the role of Kuala Lumpur mayor and leading City Hall (DBKL), Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today.

He said Maimunah is well-equipped to fulfil this responsibility, given her nearly four decades of experience in urban planning and community development, during which she had headed various institutions in Malaysia and abroad.

Anwar said Maimunah was the Penang mayor and Seberang Perai Municipal Council president. She was also president of the Malaysian Association of Local Authorities.

“Even more impressively, she was appointed executive director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, making her the only Asian woman to hold this position,” he said on Facebook.

“I hope that her vast experience will be utilised to improve the quality of life for Kuala Lumpur residents and elevate the city’s image, reputation, and stature to greater heights.”

Maimunah, 63, is the Kuala Lumpur mayor, effective today. She replaces Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh, who has retired.

Earlier, Anwar presented the letter of appointment to Maimunah.

The appointment has the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia. – August 15, 2024.
