ANTHONY Loke believes that his party’s anti-hopping rule is unaffected by the speaker’s decision to allow six former Bersatu lawmakers to keep their seats in parliament.
The DAP secretary-general said that this was because, unlike Bersatu, his party had enacted the provision before the 15th general election.
“Therefore, all candidates running under our ticket as DAP party candidates are bound by the provisions in the party’s constitution.
“In the case of Bersatu, from what I understand, their situation is somewhat different because the (party) constitutional amendments took place after the general election,” he was reported as saying by Malaysiakini today.
Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul had rejected Bersatu’s bid to remove six MPs who had their party memberships forfeited after failing to abide by updated rules.
The rules are similar to those implemented by DAP, Amanah, and Umno, which punishes rebels by forfeiting their membership.
The six MPs previously declared support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in defiance of the party’s stance as the opposition.
They are Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan) and Dr Zulkafperi Hanafi (Tanjong Karang). – July 10, 2024.
