PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today that the government stood behind its unpopular decisions even as criticism grows.

“The hate politics is too strong in this country. I don’t even take a salary, and I continue to get insulted. We are firm in our fight against corruption, and again I get insulted.

“I have a good relationship with Hamas, I get insulted, and on the BlackRock issue, I am accused of being an Israeli agent,” he said at the Finance Ministry monthly assembly.

He said the opposition’s “hate-driven politics” and labels would not distract him from effectively running the country.

Anwar said he remained focused on the challenges ahead and would not be discouraged by such tactics.

“Facts are completely disregarded (by the opposition). Only hatred is being spread. Should this affect us? No, it will not,” he said.

Anwar called on the enforcement bodies to strictly follow the law when collecting revenue.

“All enforcement bodies must maintain integrity and avoid malpractice. We have been working hard, for example, on the rationalisation of subsidies, such as those for diesel, and it would be a waste if leakages continued.

“We cannot disregard the people’s concerns and the savings accrued must be returned to the people,” he said. – July 2, 2024.
