MAKING Langkawi a Muslim-preferred destination will have an adverse effect on the government’s efforts to attract more tourists to Malaysia, MCA vice-president Wee Jack Seng said today.
He said such a religious or conservative policy would misrepresent Malaysia as closed-minded and damage the country’s tourism industry.
“The focus should remain on diversity and inclusiveness to maintain Langkawi’s appeal to all tourists. We call on the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture to reconsider this proposal to ensure Langkawi preserves its open and diverse tourism charm for all visitors,” Wee said in a statement.
On Monday, Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan suggested that Langkawi become a “preferred Muslim destination” for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
“We know that Langkawi may struggle to compete with other islands within the region. Therefore, we are considering positioning Langkawi as a preferred Muslim destination, aiming to make it more family-oriented and focused on spiritual aspects,” he told the Dewan Rakyat.
Wee, who is the Tanjung Piai MP, said the idea was narrow and lacking in foresight.
“Labelling Langkawi based on religion may deter foreign investment and undermine Malaysia’s appeal to international businesses. It also contradicts Malaysia’s values of diversity and moderation, potentially tarnishing our global image,” said Wee.
“Langkawi is renowned as an inclusive destination known for its duty-free policies and pristine beaches, attracting tourists worldwide. Redefining it for Muslim tourism could diminish its allure and lead to financial losses.”
Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing had urged Kedah not to impose religion on tourists in Langkawi. He said he had received complaints from non-Muslim tourists that local authorities in Langkawi were harassing them over their clothing and alcohol consumption.
Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi bin Md Nor denied the claims. – June 26, 2024.
