PERIKATAN Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin has responded to the government’s move to reduce egg prices with a sarcastic “thank you” to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The government has said that the 3-sen reduction in egg prices is part of efforts to return to the people the RM4 billion savings from the diesel subsidy cuts, which went into effect on June 10.
Bersatu president Muhyiddin said he had expected the government to announce a comprehensive plan to reduce the prices of goods.
“I thank the prime minister for reducing the price of eggs by three sen… except that I thought the prime minister would be announcing a comprehensive mechanism to reduce prices of goods,” he said on Facebook.
Muhyiddin said the government should have announced a RM4 billion package to help the people instead of merely reducing egg prices.
The former prime minister reminded the government that the removal of the blanket subsidy for diesel has resulted in price hikes for many goods and services, including school bus fares.“To help the people, the government should have announced a comprehensive package worth RM4 billion, which is equivalent to the savings anticipated from the targeted diesel subsidy plan.
“However, what was announced was a reduction in egg prices, which would only cost the government about RM100 million.” – June 18, 2024.
