LAWYER Mahmud Abdul Jumaat has confirmed that he is still representing the parents of six-year-old Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin. The couple were remanded over their alleged involvement in the murder of their autistic son.
Taking to Facebook, Mahmud said he decided to continue his representation after meeting with the family. He shared that on the night of May 31, he received a call from Zayn Rayyan’s paternal family at 11pm, following the couple’s (Zaim and Isma) detention and their pending presentation at the Petaling Jaya Court for a remand application the next day.
“I want to emphasises that this was an initiative by Zayn Rayyan’s paternal family, not an NGO endeavour. However, I’m uncertain how the other story emerged.
“Regarding the matter of an official appointment letter, with the purest of intentions, I wanted to help because I felt pity for them. They had not only lost their child but were also facing remand as suspects, a considerable ordeal,” he said.
On June 4, it was reported that Mahmud, of the firm Emir Mahmud & Co, had stated that no longer represented the couple.
That same afternoon, former deputy public prosecutor Fahmi Abd Moin said he was the couple’s lawyer.
Last Friday, the father of the male suspect, Zahari Mohd Reba, aged 56, stated that Mahmud was appointed by an NGO.
On December 6 last year, Zayn was found dead in a stream near Idaman Apartment in Damansara Damai. The body was discovered by a group of residents about 200m from his apartment unit after he was reported missing. β June 11, 2024.
