THE Court of Appeal today agreed to temporarily release Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s passport to allow him to travel to Singapore and Taiwan.
His passport was impounded by the court pending the disposal of his appeal to quash his conviction and sentence for criminal breach of trust, funds misappropriation, and money laundering.
For his crimes, the 31-year-old was sentenced to seven years in jail and fined RM10 million for his crimes. He is also to be caned twice.
Syed Saddiq filed a temporary passport release bid on May 8 to attend the wedding of a close friend on May 18 in Singapore.
The Muar MP said in his supporting affidavit that he had also been invited by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia to visit Taiwan on June 10-15.
This morning, a three-person Court of Appeal bench chaired by Justice Hadhariah Syed Ismail unanimously allowed the temporary release of the travel document.
“The passport is to be returned on or by June 18,” Hadhariah ruled.
The other justices on the bench were Mohamed Zaini Mazlan and Azmi Ariffin.The prosecution did not object to the order. – May 15, 2024.
