INDEPENDENT candidate Nyau Ke Xin finds herself under pressure to bow out of the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election on May 11, reports Free Malaysia Today.

Nyau revealed that she has been inundated with a barrage of anonymous phone calls since nomination day on April 27, urging her to reconsider her candidacy.

According to her, the callers, though polite, were insistent, suggesting that her bid was futile and advising her to abandon the by-election.

“They told me I had no chance of winning, that my efforts were fruitless,” Nyau recounted to FMT.

“It was implied that I should withdraw to avoid wasting my resources and to prevent vote-splitting.”

One caller suggested that Nyau lacked the financial means to mount a credible campaign, urging her to “sit at home” instead.

However, election laws do not allow her to withdraw at this stage, but she can withdraw from campaigning. This is, however, not something that Nyau wants to do at all.

Nyau said she remains resolute, vowing to intensify her campaign efforts.

She also dismissed allegations labeling her as a political proxy, adding that she wanted to offer voters an alternative beyond the confines of established political factions.

“My intention is clear: to provide a platform for the people of Kuala Kubu Baharu to voice their discontent with the current political landscape,” she said.

The by-election will see a four-cornered fight involving Pang Sock Tao of Pakatan Harapan/DAP, Khairul Azhari Saut (Perikatan Nasional/Bersatu), Hafizah Zainuddin (Parti Rakyat Malaysia) and Nyau. – May 5, 2024.
