PERIKATAN Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is confident of winning the Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat if there is a large Malay turnout at the by-election.

The Bersatu president said his coalition will win if 80% of the Malay electorate were to vote.

“Some 47% of voters here are Malay, 30% Chinese and 18% Indian. The remaining 5% are others, including Orang Asli,” he said outside the nomination centre today.

The by-election is a four-cornered battle waged by Pakatan Harapan (PH), Perikatan Nasional (PN), Parti Rakyat Malaysia, and an Independent.Election Commission returning

Election Commission officer Yuhanas Auree Kamaruddin announced today the candidacy of Khairul Azhari Saut (PN), Pang Sock Tao (PH), Hafizah Zainudin (PRM), and Nyau Ke Xin (Independent).

Muhyiddin said PN candidate Khairul was selected because voters wanted a Malay leader to resolve their problems.

He was confident that kitchen table issues, such as the high cost of living, would give PN an edge in the polls.

DAP has held the seat since 2013.

The May 11 by-election was triggered by the death of three-term assemblyman Lee Kiong Hiong of DAP.

Early voting is on May 7. – April 27, 2024.
