PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he was given an undertaking by MIC president SA Vigneswaran that the party will help campaign for Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the May 11 Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

This despite earlier reports that MIC will not be campaigning to help anyone apart from any Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate.

“That is not true… MIC president (Vigneswaran) called me, he told me that he will go (and help with the campaigning in Kuala Kubu Baharu) tomorrow, Monday.

“Reports that said MIC does not want to campaign are not true,” he said at the conclusion of PKR’s 25th anniversary special convention today, reports Malaysiakini.

Anwar was responding to questions from the media that BN component parties - MCA and MIC - would not participate in campaigning if the candidate was not from BN.

Anwar however did not mention anything about MCA.

Unlike MIC, MCA has made an official statement to state that it would not be involved in the Kuala Kubu Baharu campaign.

The party had earlier expressed disappointment with BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for making a unilateral decision to give up the seat in fable row PH.

MIC had traditionally contested in the Kuala Kubu Baharu seat.

The Kuala Kubu Baharu seat fell vacant following the demise of its incumbent, Lee Kee Hiong, from DAP, on March 21.

The Election Commission has set May 11 for polling, while nomination and early voting will be on April 27 and May 7 respectively. – April 21, 2024.
