Rate PKR’s success by its reformasi-based policies, says Saifuddin

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail today said the party’s success should not be gauged by the number of its elected representatives but how it had translated its reformasi struggles into government policies.

Speaking at the PKR convention in conjunction with the party’s 25th anniversary celebration in Shah Alam, Saifuddin said success must also be reflected in programmes for the benefit of the people.

“The party’s achievement and success should not be evaluated based on the number of ministers, menteris besar, state executive councillors, members of parliament and state assemblymen from PKR.

“This is not how we evaluate the performance of the party.

“The actual way to evaluate our performance is how we understand and translate our ‘reformasi’ struggles into (government) policies which will benefit the people,” said the home minister, as reported by the New Straits Times.

PKR, being part of Pakatan Harapan, first gained federal power after the 2018 general election but the government was toppled in 22 months.

It once again formed the federal government with the support of Umno/Barisan Nasional after the 2022 general election, with party president Anwar Ibrahim becoming the prime minister.

PKR was formed following the sacking of Anwar from the BN government in 1998, and had rallied on his reformasi cries to form a better government.

Meanwhile, Saifuddin also said the issue affecting the party leadership in Sabah must be solved soon.

“I salute Sabah (PKR). However, in recent days, there has been some turbulence affecting the party.

“I hope there will be an immediate solution to this ‘turbulence’. Please do not prolong it,” he said.

Fifteen of the 26 party division chiefs have gone against state chairman Sangkar Rasam and want him replaced.

Sangkar, however, insists that the decision on his position is the prerogative of Anwar.

When Anwar was in Kota Kinabalu yesterday, he said PKR’s top leadership would decide on who will lead its Sabah chapter soon.

He added that more than 10 names have been submitted for the party’s top post in the state. – April 21, 2024.
