HANIF Omar, who was the country’s longest-serving inspector-general of police, died this morning. He was 85.

The news was conveyed on Facebook by his son, Abdul Rahmat Omar Mohamed Haniff.

“It is with great sadness that I, Abdul Rahmat Omar Mohamed Haniff, announce the passing of my dearly beloved father around 2.15am,” he said.

Hanif was appointed IGP on June 8, 1974 following the assassination of his predecessor Abdul Rahman Hashim. He retired in January 1994.

Born in Teluk Intan, Perak, Hanif became the Malacca police chief in 1970, before taking the same top position in Selangor in 1971.

In 1973, he became the deputy IGP.

He was a member of the Royal Commission to Enhance the Operation and Management of the Police in 2004-2005. – April 20, 2024.
