Facebook users to be questioned over Quran recital posts

THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has called up four Facebook users for their statements over fake content involving the organisation of a Quran recital.

MCMC, in a statement, said the data uploaded by the four have been recorded as evidence for further action.

More would be called up to assist in the investigation.

The case is filed under section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the offences of using network facilities to transmit communication deemed to be offensive or annoying. An offence under the section is punishable by a maximum fine of RM50,000 or jail for up to one year or both.

“MCMC is investigating the spread of false content involving the organisation of a Quran recital.

“The spread of the content was detected on the Facebook application on several accounts,” read the statement.

The commission advised the public not to use the internet to spread falsehoods.

Claims that Malaysia will no longer host the Quran Recital Assembly in favour of concerts have gone viral on Facebook and X over the past few days.

Deputy religious affairs minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Zulkifli Hasan has denied this, saying the national Quran Recital and Memorisation Assembly will take place on May 23-28 in Kuantan.

The International Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly is scheduled for October 5-12. – April 6, 2024.
