THE Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry Penang branch director, S. Jegan, reported that his team conducted a raid on a supermarket in Sungai Jawi, Nibong Tebal, which was hoarding 1kg polybags of subsidised cooking oil and selling them to foreign workers at a significant profit. The enforcement team, after a week-long surveillance, executed the raid at 4pm.

“In the raid, we found 4,480kg of 1kg oil packages, which exceeded the permitted retail limit of 1,000kg and the reason the trader gave was that he kept a lot of stock to facilitate his transactions,” Jegan said today.

“The local supermarket owner, in his 30s, gets his stock from suppliers around the state and only sells to foreign workers who live around the supermarket area.

“We believe he made an easy profit by selling each packet of subsidised oil at RM3 to RM3.50 over the past year.”

Jegan said his raiding party confiscated 3,480kg of cooking oil worth RM8,700 and some documents to help with investigations in the case.

“We also recorded the supermarket owner’s statement for further investigation under the Control of Supplies Act 1961,” he said. – Bernama, January 19, 2024.
