7 including police inspector held over abduction probe

SEREMBAN police chief Arifai Tarawe said a police inspector is among seven individuals who have been arrested on suspicion of being involved in the abduction of a Bangladeshi man on January 10.

The arrests were carried out in response to a report filed by the victim’s 32-year-old brother at around 1 am on the same day.

According to the report, the 27-year-old victim, employed as an electrical wiring contract worker, was forcibly confined by a group of men in a house.

“The victim was said to be in debt to one of the men and was ordered to pay RM25,000 or be beaten.

“The police then raided a house in Mambau and rescued the victim at 10.30pm, the next day,” he said in a statement tonight.

Arifai said that among the six suspects arrested, aged between 31 and 57, three were locals, and the remaining three were Bangladeshis. The investigation also uncovered the involvement of a police officer with the rank of inspector.

The 57-year-old police officer was subsequently arrested in Perak around 11:15am on January 12 to aid in the ongoing investigation.

“All suspects are being remanded for seven days until tomorrow according to section 363 of the Penal Code,” he said. – Bernama, January 18, 2024.
