‘Mentega Terbang’ director charged with hurting religious feelings

THE director of the banned movie “Mentega Terbang” was charged at the Kuala Lumpur magistrate’s court today with intentionally hurting the religious feelings of others. 

Khairi Anwar Jailani claimed trial when the charge was read to him before magistrate Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim. 

The offence under Section 298 of the Penal Code carries punishment of a maximum of one year’s imprisonment, a fine, or both. 

The director was allowed bail of RM6,000 with one surety.  

The court issued a gag order to stop Khairi from issuing comments related to the case throughout the trial. 

Case mention has been set for March 14. 

He was accused of committing the offence as director and scriptwriter of the movie on February 26 last year. 

The offence was said to have been committed at 12.34pm on February 26, 2023 at Diamond Regency, Jalan Semarak Api 2, 53000 Kuala Lumpur. 

Lawyers N. Surendran and Zaid Malek represented Khairi while deputy public prosecutor Nor Azizah Aling prosecuted. – January 17, 2024.
