THE Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has announced that 84% of water consumers, or 495,065 accounts, have had their water supply restored as at 6am today.

“PBAPP is now working to restore water supply to 99.5% of the 590,000 consumers, from 6am today, with treated water from the Sungai Dua water treatment plant to the island.

“PBAPP is also focusing on restoring water supply in the Barat Daya district, especially in areas at the end of pipelines and at high elevation, expected to be completed by 6am tomorrow,” said the statement.

A total of 590,000 user accounts throughout Penang were affected by a scheduled water cut from 6am Wednesday, but at least 101 areas in Seberang Perai Utara and Seberang Perai Tengah received water supply after 48 hours.

PBAPP said it identified new leaks along the Sungai Perai pipeline yesterday.

“Repairs on the leaks will be carried out as soon as possible,” said the statement.

Yesterday, the media reported PBAPP took immediate steps to divert a temporary pipe following the discovery of new leaks in the Sungai Perai pipeline.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow reportedly said the 900mm pipe was diverted across the Ampang Jajar bridge on the river’s surface, after the existing pipe was declared irreparable. – Bernama, January 13, 2024.
