A FIREBOMB was thrown into Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham’s house in Perak early this morning, resulting in a fire which also razed a car.

The incident was confirmed by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke in a statement.

Loke said Ngeh told him that a “Molotov cocktail” had been thrown into his house and the Fire and Rescue Department managed to prevent the fire from spreading.

“DAP strongly condemns this violent attack that threatens the safety of Ngeh and his family, and emphasises that any form of violence cannot be accepted in dealing with differences in our society.

“DAP also calls on the Home Ministry and the Royal Malaysia Police to take this incident seriously and ensure that public safety and peace are always maintained,” said Loke.

Meanwhile Malaysiakini reported Perak police chief Yusri Hassan Basri as confirming the fire was suspected to be an act of arson, and that investigation is being carried out from multiple angles.

“Correct, the police are carrying out a thorough investigation from multiple aspects. I request any witnesses to come forward to assist in investigations,” he was quoted as saying.

Chinese daily Sin Chew Daily meanwhile reported that the incident happened at 2.50am and no casualties were reported.

Ngeh and his wife were reportedly asleep during the incident and were awakened by a passer-by who rang the doorbell to alert them to the fire.

The Ayer Tawar Fire and Rescue Services Department received a report on the incident at 3.05am and arrived at the scene at 3.12am.

Ngeh, who is a Perak DAP leader and state Pakatan Harapan chief, lodged a report on the matter at the Ayer Tawar police station.

He faced public scrutiny in recent days after suggesting the inclusion of non-Muslim experts in the special committee to review the jurisdiction of the Shariah Court.

Following widespread backlash, he apologised and withdrew his proposal. – January 10, 2024.
