PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim has instructed a report be drawn up on ongoing water supply problems at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), despite the government having approved RM3 million last year to overcome the issue.

At an assembly with Finance Ministry staff in Putrajaya today, Anwar, who is also finance minister, said he found out from social media about UMS students still facing water problems and raised the matter to Higher Education Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir.

“I don’t understand (why the water issue has not been solved). Maybe the project takes time. I don’t want to judge. I want a report on what has happened since the (RM3 million allocation) was approved by the finance minister.

“Perhaps, (Treasury Secretary-General Johan Mahmood Merican) can ask the secretary-general of the ministry concerned about what has happened since I approved (the RM3 million allocation), as well as actions taken by the ministry and the university,” he said.

On May 31 last year, Putrajaya approved the allocation for UMS to resolve its water supply problems, and yesterday, Zambry announced an additional allocation of RM2 million to UMS for the same purpose. – Bernama, January 9, 2024.
