THE Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) said the government must seriously consider policies and strategies to minimise the impact of disasters on animals.

Its president Mohideen Abdul Kader said livestock are often among the casualties of natural disasters, especially floods, adding that farmers who make a living by livestock farming have been severely affected as animals were not a priority in disaster management.

He said disaster risk reduction was a proactive measure, and cooperation with international animal welfare groups could ensure the safety of pets and livestock.

“The Agriculture and Food Securities Ministry and the Veterinary Services Department must seriously consider implementing policies and strategies to reduce risks and minimise the impact of disasters on animals.

“Floods not only destroy property but cause the loss of human and animal lives and crops. Animals suffer during disasters because they are highly dependent on humans. We urge for domestic and livestock animals to be included in emergency plans,” he said in a statement today.

Mohideen said Statistics Department data showed a loss of RM36.9 million in the livestock sector in 2022, which impacted the economy.

He said emergency preparedness was crucial to safeguard animal welfare and business continuity. – Bernama, January 3, 2024.
