THERE was greater awareness about early evacuation among Terengganu people during floods, state Fire and Rescue Department director Hassan ‘As’ari Omar said.
He said this was apparent during this monsoon season, with most victims moving out of their homes before floodwaters rose.
“The percentage of people being rescued by the fire department was not that high because of rising awareness among Terengganu people,” he told reporters at the Kuala Berang Fire and Rescue Station today.
Hassan ‘As’ari said rescuers responded to 75 emergency calls and evacuated 474 people during the third wave of floods that struck the state on Saturday.
The state Disaster Management Committee secretariat said the number of flood evacuees in Terengganu rose to 2,642 at 2pm, compared with 2,111 this morning.
They were housed at 49 relief centres in six districts – Dungun, Hulu Terengganu, Kemaman, Besut, Setiu and Marang. – Bernama, December 25, 2023.
