THE 10% sales tax on online purchases would only apply to imported goods under RM500, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said.

He said this would enhance the competitiveness of local products, whose online sales would not be taxed.

“It only applies to products imported from overseas that are sold online in Malaysia. Products produced in the country are not affected. I hope this will clear up misunderstandings among the public about the tax.

“We can refer to the official Customs Department website for detailed information, and we will monitor to ensure the people, especially sellers and buyers who perform online transactions, really understand (the tax),” the unity government spokesman told a press conference after launching the Reuse, Educate, Nurture and Empower with Waste (RENEW) programme at Dataran Sri Angkasa Jaya in Kuala Lumpur today.

The Customs Department yesterday announced a 10% sales tax on low-value goods sold online from January 1.

On the RENEW programme organised by the Institute of Continuing Education Professional Studies of Universiti Teknologi MARA, Fahmi, who is Lembah Pantai MP, said it was a good initiative towards preserving the environment.

He said more than 100kg of used cooking oil was collected yesterday, reflecting the local community’s increased awareness in Lembah Pantai on how to manage used cooking oil. – Bernama, December 17, 2023.
