Police officer remanded over road crash death of student

A SENIOR police officer who caused the death of a student in a road crash in Ipoh yesterday will be remanded today for investigation.

Ipoh District police chief Yahaya Hassan said the case was filed under section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless and dangerous driving.

The officer was detained yesterday to assist in the investigation into the death of Form Five student Muhammad Zaharif Affendi, who died after the officer’s car hit his motorcycle.

The crash happened near SMK Jati in Meru. The student died at the scene.

“The results of the autopsy revealed that the cause of his death was chest and abdominal injuries due to a road crash,” Yahaya said in a statement last night.

Police are also considering invoking section 302 of the Penal Code for murder

“PDRM will not protect anyone, including its own officers, if it has strong evidence (of wrongdoing),” Yahaya said, referring to the police by its Malay acronym. – December 16, 2023.
