THERE was no need for the Federal Constitution to be amended to restrict the prime ministership to Malays, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, adding there had been no serious request or discussion for an amendment.

“So far, there is no need, no serious application, no discussion.

“From our Independence until now, the candidates for prime minister have been Malay.

“Even after this, the candidates from the government and the Opposition will be Malay,” he told reporters after performing Friday prayers in Bandar Baru Bangi today.

Bersatu youth chief Wan Fayhsal Wan Ahmad had proposed the amendment to “restore confidence” among the Malays who were perturbed by DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang’s recent remarks that the Federal Constitution does not bar a non-Malay from being prime minister.

Lim triggered a national debate, after giving a speech in which he expressed his hope for Malaysia to one day have a non-Malay prime minister.

Since then several police reports were made, and the former Opposition lead is under police investigation.

Lim had maintained he had no intention of being provocative as his remarks fall within the realm of the Federal Constitution. – December 15, 2023.
