DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has confirmed he would be giving a statement to police soon over his speech in Manchester, the United Kingdom, recently.
The former Iskandar Puteri MP is under investigation for saying the Federal Constitution provides that a non-Malay can be a prime minister.
In his meeting with Malaysian students in Manchester at the end of last month, Lim said Malaysians, regardless of race, must share a Malaysian dream, not a mono-ethnic dream.
But he also said it was unlikely a non-Malay would become prime minister in the next century.
Umno Supreme Council member Hasmuni Hassan was among Lim’s critics, saying the veteran’s remarks hurt the Malays.
In a statement today, Lim said: “I was accused of making provocative remarks when I said the Malaysian constitution provides that a non-Malay can be a prime minister. There was no such intention.”
He said he agreed with commentators that at present, the statement that a non-Malay could be a prime minister of Malaysia was a “statement of fact”, not a “statement of reality”.
Last week, Lim confirmed the police had called him up for questioning over the speech he made in the UK. – December 11, 2023.
